Side Event at UNFCCC Climate Conference - COP15: REDD Initiatives in the Congo Basin co-organised by COMIFAC and GAF AG

A side event co-hosted by the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC) and GAF AG Munich, Germany was organized on the 11th of December 2009 at the Bella Centre COP15 Copenhagen. The event was also supported by the German Development Bank (KfW), the German Technical Corporation (GTZ) and Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP). Important to note is the participation of key Environment and Forest Ministers from the COMIFAC sub-region; more specifically the Ministers from the Central African Republic (current President of COMIFAC), the Secretary General of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the Ministers from the Republic of Congo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Finally the German Minister of Economic Development and Cooperation also supported and participated in the Side Event. Additionally representatives from governments, NGOs and the scientific community were also present.

GSE FM's success leads to a three year contract with ESA to implement new REDD Pilot Projects

In December 2009 the European Space Agency (ESA) awarded the GAF AG a contract to implement with Partners new GSE FM services in the Republic of Congo, Gabon and Lao PDR. The Pilot Projects are addressing the post-Kyoto Protocol reporting mechanism on the "Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation" (REDD) in developing countries and have the aim to integrate the application of Earth Observation (EO) technologies into the monitoring and measuring of deforestation and degradation of tropical rainforests.

GSE FM plans a service roll-out to support the UNFCCC post-Kyoto REDD mechanism

During the course of the GSE FM there was an effort from the Consortium to become more involved in the policy development processes of the post-Kyoto Protocol mechanism in the UNFCCC. A new service which addresses the post-Kyoto Protocol reporting mechanism on the "Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation" (REDD) in developing countries was initiated in 2007 and service provisions for REDD Pilot Projects were extended to Cameroon and Bolivia. The REDD Pilot Project in Cameroon received considerable financial support from the German Development Bank KfW and GTZ-COMIFAC.

Successfull Completion of Stage 2

The GSE FM implementation stage was successfully completed in May 2009. The key achievements of the second stage of the GSE FM were the positive user assessments of the Service Portfolio, the high value of the services provided, and the development of an effective service supply chain. The management and performance of the GSE FM Service Network provided the basis for successful implementation of all the GSE FM services in Europe and to expand the services to developing countries.
