ESA Press Release about COP12 Side Event in Nairobi

Together with ESA, GSE Forest Monitoring had attended the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Nairobi. ESA has published a Press Release about the side event where ESA, GSEFM and partners made a joint presentation.

NOV 2006:
New Website Design
The GSE FM Website has been transformed to a CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) layout and fulfils following standards:
HTML 4.01 and
CSS 3. It has been optimised for
Internet Explorer 6.0,
but has been tested in
Mozilla Firefox 1.0.8 and
Netscape 7.1.
It is made for resolutions 800 x 600 and higher.
NOV 2006:
United Nations Climate Change Conference - Nairobi 2006

GSEFM is attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Nairobi, from 6 - 17 November 2006. If you intend on meeting with GSEFM, please
contact our team.
GSEFM and ESA will hold a presentation in the
Side Event "Reducing emissions from deforestation in developing countries: can it be measured?".
It is scheduled for Thursday, November 9th 2006 at 11:15 until 12:45 in the room "African Blackwood Tree".
OCT 2006:
Annual Review Meeting in Vienna
The Annual Review Meeting (PM4) of the GSE Forest Monitoring Consortium was held in Vienna, Austria from 9-11 October 2007. The meeting was hosted by Dr. Stefanie Linser of the Umweltbundesamt Austria.
This final meeting for Phase 1 of the GSE FM was attended by users, service providers, research partners and expert consultants. The objective of the meeting was the presentation of the main achievements by the consortium in Phase 1. Additionally, the further plans for Phase 2 were also discussed.
A key end result was an overall good user evaluation and demonstrable new user interests and related services; these factors provide evidence for the increasing user demand and progress towards sustainability. The next Phase will be initiated in November 2006.

JUL 2006:
Progress Meeting 3 in Paris

The third Progress Meeting for the GSE FM Stage 2 was held in Paris, France from 6-7 July 2006. The meeting was hosted by Dr. M. Deshayes of Cemagref, France. The main aim of this PM was the presentation of the delivery of the service cases to the users.
A total of 29 partners attended, the majority being Service Providers.
The results of the third quarter of the Phase 1, indicated that the new procedures related to improved control on the standards and quality assurance for production as well as documentation of the
Service Operations had been adopted by the Service Network and provided more transparent and homogenous methods of documenting and assessing progress.

APR 2006:
Progress Meeting 2 in Hamburg

The second Progress Meeting for the GSE FM Stage 2 was held in Hamburg, Germany from 4-5 April 2006. The meeting was hosted by
Prof. Dr. Michael Köhl (Chair of World Forestry Institute) of SfM in Hamburg.
ESA and a select group of 12 GSE FM Consortium partners presented and discussed the recent activities which included innovative developments with the presentation of a prototype GSE FM Web Portal, the INSPIRE-related activities, and the technical steps for the Service Evolution that have been initiated as well as the formalisation of the User Executive Body (UEB).
The meeting was successful in achieving its objectives of reviewing and discussing the deliverables of the last quarter and their role in further developing the service network. The reports, presentations and minutes of the meeting can be found on the Intrasite.

MAR 2006:
GOFC-GOLD Symposium

GOFC-GOLD is a coordinated international effort to ensure a continuous program of space-based and in situ forest and land cover observations to better understand global change, to support international assessments and environmental treaties and to contribute to natural resources management.
The meeting focused on the current discussions post COP11-UNFCCC on the feasibility of compensation for tropical countries to reduce deforestation following the first commitment period and the role of EO in facilitating this process (ie monitoring of deforestation etc.).
GSE Forest Monitoring contributed actively and Chaired related working sessions which developed proposed technical issues related to the role of EO in monitoring and mapping tropical deforestation and degradation, as well as organizational issues in the context of policy formulation for the post Kyoto reporting period. These contributions will be compiled for the report from GOFC GOLD to be submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat for consideration by March 31 2006.

FEB 2006:
TASK 4 Technology Transfer Review Meeting

The first Review Meeting of Task 4 was held in Vienna, Austria on the 23rd February 2006. It was hosted by IIASA, GAF AG and responsible TASK 4 consortium partners.
The partners discussed the overall importance of the need for incorporation of new developments in EO R&D into the GSE FM service portfolio as part of improving the service delivery to the user community.
This form of technology transfer will demonstrate how GSE FM can link the research communities investigations into operational systems.
The participants will prepare for the first phase a Technical note on the inclusion of recent Radar and Optical Developments into the current service chains to improve overall accuracies and reduce costs/time in production.

FEB 2006:
Successful first Progress Meeting

The first Progress Meeting of Stage 2 was held in Rome, Italy from the 2nd to 3rd February 2006. Hosted by Telespazio, GAF AG and the entire GSE FM service community, the objective of the meeting was to report and present the latest status of the project to the European Space Agency (ESA).
With more than 27 participants, an intensive and interesting discussion was conducted on the status of the various services. All activities were reported to be on schedule. Additional discussions were held on achievements to date which included progress on GSE FM's involvement in INSPIRE as well the design of a prototype WEB PORTAL.
